14 May, Kathmandu: The Election Commission has estimated that there was 71 per cent voting in the first phase of the local level election held in 34 districts on Sunday.

It was informed by Chief Election Commissioner Dr Ayodhee Prasad Yadav during a press conference organized at Election Commission this evening.

CEC Dr Yadav said the preliminary details have put the voting at 71 percent. The first phase of the local election was held at 281 local levels of 3, 4 and 6 provinces in the country.

He expressed happiness over the massive and enthusiastic participation of people resulting in peaceful and successful conduction of the election. The election will contribute significantly to implement the constitution, he hoped.

The participation, as he said, was from diverse communities- women, Dalit, and minorities as well.
“Except some untoward incidents, the first phase of local level election was held in a peaceful and enthusiastic atmosphere with the massive participation of people. EC extends sincere congratulations to the voters, for they keenly participated in the democratic practice making it a success,” he underscored.

According to him, the voting at a voting centre of Namobuddha municipality-4 of Kavrepalanchowk and at the voting centre of Melung rural municipality of Dolakha had to be postponed despite EC’s unwillingness. The EC expressed grief over the death of a person in the security action in Dolakha.

Helicopters were being used to ferry the ballot boxes from the remote voting centres to the offices of the chief returning officers.

The people with various problems as mourning the deaths of relatives, and those with visual impairment also participated in the election.

The CEC argued that the first round of election has made the voters for the second round eager to cast votes.
The vote counting would be initiated after receiving the ballot boxes at the offices of the Chief Election Officer and Returning Officer.

The EC has said that the date and time of the vote count would be fixed by the Chief Election Officer and Returning Officer based on the coordination with the political parties.

The EC has claimed that no problems were emerged in the polling centres, for there was not any managerial pitfall from the EC side.

All Chief Election Officers, Returning Officers, Polling Officers and other staffers and security personnel are thanked for their supports despite hard times.

The EC has appealed to all political parties and candidates to fully respect the people’s mandate and have faith on the election result adding that the voters’ verdict was sealed in the ballot boxes.

Likewise, the EC said that its preparations were satisfactory despite delayed consensus among the political parties, lack of time for voters’ education and large-size ballot paper, adding that the voters’ identity cards have helped to make the polls free, fair and credible.

Similarly, the EC has thanked the government, neighbouring countries, donor agencies, development partners and international community for their assistance and goodwill. RSS
