Quebec Election 2026: Parti Québécois Wins, Forms Minority Government

Canadakhabar Desk

October 5, 2026: The Parti Québécois (PQ), led by Paul St-Pierre Plamondon, has won Quebec’s provincial election, returning the sovereigntist party to power after more than a decade.

the PQ is leading with 59 seats, followed by the Quebec Liberal Party with 40, the Parti conservateur du Québec with 19, and Québec solidaire with 9.

With 127 seats in Quebec’s National Assembly, a party needs 64 seats for a majority. The PQ therefore appears headed for a minority government, meaning it will need support from opposition parties to pass legislation and maintain confidence in the legislature.

The result marks a major political shift in Quebec, ending the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) government’s eight-year hold on power. The PQ’s return also brings renewed attention to the debate over Quebec sovereignty and its relationship with the federal government.

Paul St-Pierre Plamondon’s victory is expected to have significant implications for Quebec politics and Canadian national unity in the months ahead
