    Rudra Dahal

Family mealtime is an opportunity to be together with all the members of the family. This tradition has been practised since the beginning of humankind. These days, due to our busy schedules, finding the time to eat together is more challenging.

The average American eats one meal in every five meals in their cars. One in four Americans eats one fast food every day, and most of the American family eats a single meal together less than five days a week. This shows that many Americans are missing meaningful time with their family members. Eating together gives mental satisfaction which promotes physical and psychological positive effects.Studies have found that students who do not eat dinner together with their parents do not perform as well in school. Another study concluded that children who eat dinner with their parents have less trouble with drugs and alcohol.

In many countries, meal time is treated as sacred. For instance, in France, while it is acceptable to eat by oneself- one never rushes a meal. Employees are given an hour for lunch at any job so that they have time to eat with their families. In Mexico, town people eat together with friends and families in parks. In Cambodia, villagers share foods in the form of potlucks.

Family meals are directly associated with greater consumption of healthy food. Increased family meal frequency may decrease the risk of overweight or obesity in children and adolescents. Similarly, eating together may also protect against eating disorders. Family mealtime is an opportunity to teach children manners, social skills, share responsibilities, and share values regarding food.

Here are some advantages of eating together:

    • Provides the opportunity for family interaction,
    • Helps children to learn culture and tradition,
    • Helps to bond with members in the family,
    • Supports communication among family members,
    • Increases parental engagement,
    • Fuels academic success,
    • Develops a sharing and caring culture,
    • Reduces engagement in risky behaviours,
    • Encourages a sense of belonging among members,
    • Promotes feelings of security in children,
    • Strengthens family bonds,
    • Minimise stress

To conclude, sharing meals together as a family has a positive impact on physical and mental health. It is important that we keep this tradition alive.
